I've been asked to compile a list of the anime titles that I'd personally recommend watching; and some that I would prefer people avoided so as not to become thoroughly disappointed in the genre. The following anime I strongly recommend:
Death Note
It's about a student who finds a notebook that kills people whose names are written into it. This student uses the notebook and soon discovers that getting away with murder is not as easy as it seems. Did you know that Gods of Death love apples?
Light Yagami (Kira): “I’ll take a potato chip… AND EAT IT!”
Berserk
A cursed man who has lost everything and everybody, wielding a sword as tall as himself with just one hand, sets out to get revenge on the person who has taken it all from him. This anime is set in medieval time and it tells the tragic tale of Guts.
Steins; Gate
A group of young people invent a time machine, explore the concepts of time travel and end up tampering with it. Things go seriously wrong and the main character has to set the timeline right and repair the damage caused.
Elfen Lied
Lucy is a girl who was born with an abnormality that the humanity is threatened by. She was securely contained until the containment chamber was breached and she escaped. She escaped, but suffered a concussion that caused her to suffer from amnesia, making her forget her anger and hate towards the whole of humanity that has mistreated her.
Gantz
Gantz is a man living inside a mysterious black ball. It revives and gathers a few select dead people from a certain region into a small apartment room to make them kill aliens for points. If they gather enough points, they are supposedly set free. This anime contains lots of gore, violence, obscenity and nudity. Just what the doctor ordered. Beware of the ending.
Monster
Dr. Tenma is a doctor who saves the lives of two twin siblings. Johan, one of the saved twins turns out to be a murderous monster and Dr. Tenma decides to correct his mistake of saving Johan's life.
